WHILE the Ross-on-Wye branch of the Factory Shop will continue trading after the company entered into administration, placing 1,180 jobs at risk across the UK.
However, customers in Ross have been warned to be ‘mindful of staff’ when they visit the retailer as it has made a plea stating that it is a ‘very difficult time for staff.’
Last week closing down posters appeared in the windows along with others stating ‘Everything must go’.
The shop in Ross states that it does not know its final date of trading will be, but will update customers when staff find out further information.
A spokesperson for the Ross store said: “Whilst the future could have many variations, what we do know is that for now, we are still here for you.”
Administrators Interpath explained that the discount retailer had struggled amid rising costs, fewer shoppers and policy changes which resulted in ‘significant increases’ to staffing costs.
While the Ross store, located at The Maltings shopping parade, remains open to customers, the company’s online shop has since closed.
The retailer was founded in 1969 and is known for selling discounted branded products ranging from homewares and furniture to clothing, toys and electrical goods.
Rick Harrison, managing director at Interpath and joint administrator, said the business had been a long-standing feature of communities across the country but had been heavily impacted by current trading conditions.
Interpath also pointed to problems with a third-party warehouse and logistics operator, which it said had further affected sales and stock levels.
Modella Capital, which also owns TG Jones, formerly WH Smith, and Hobbycraft, began insolvency proceedings for The Original Factory Shop in January, along with accessories chain Claire’s, which it also owns and is still seeking to sell.
The Original Factory Shop began life in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1969 as part of Peter Black's retail network. Initially it sold soap manufactured by one of Black's factories.
