ROSS Photo Club’s recently held its first ‘print’ competition of the 2025/26 season - an open theme competition allowing photographers to submit printed image on a subject of their choice.
The submissions were taken on digital cameras and smartphones and, with over 50 entries, the judge, David Lowe, had a difficult task to undertake.

Mr Lowe is a member of the Smethwick Photographic Society and has achieved numerous national and international awards. He is well known as a competition judge and gave constructive feedback on all entries both for the colour section and the mono section.

The winner of the colour photograph section was Paul Dowgill with his wildlife image entitled Evasive Action; runner up was Barbara Nash with her atmospheric photograph Minaret Agra and third place was Roger Irwin’s ‘Sanctuary’ in a religious setting.

Highly Commended in this section were Jennie O’Brien and Linda Thomas and commended were Jennie O’Brien and Gordon Hay.

In the black and white / mono category, the winner was Paul Dowgill with his photograph of the Loch Ness Reflection while Chris Phillipson was runner up with a picture of the Berlin Olympic Stadium. John Ryland was third with his picture of a Tunnel of Light.
Barbara Nash and Matthew Rainer were both highly commended in this section while John Crowland and Sandra Walding were both commended for their efforts.
Ross Photo Club meets on Wednesday evenings at Walford Village Hall, between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.
There are free tester sessions for new members. Beginners and accomplished photographers are all welcome. There is also a monthly zoom meeting to share photographs.
Occasionally the club holds exhibitions of its photographs, most recently this was at St Mary’s Church in Ross-on-Wye.
