MADAM, I have written to the Planning Directorate about the proposal to install a mobile phone mast and associated equipment at the west end of Eastfield Road (Ross Gazette, December 1st).
In my letter, I wrote: "My understanding is that the mast is to receive, amplify and re-transmit mobile phone messages.
"All electromagnetic radiation can damage living cells, and repeated exposure results in cumulative damage. At one end of the spectrum, sunshine can produce skin cancer. At the other end unexpected clusters of blood disorders have been reported in populations living under high tension electric cables. The discoverers of diagnostic X-rays later developed serious skin and bone damage, and turned their new tool to destroy cancer cells. All are familiar now with the formidable protection provided for today's radiologists. and radiographers.
"The chief objection to the proposed mobile phone equipment at the end of my road is that it would be only 30 to 50 yards from a childrens' play area, where there are often small babies in prams or pushchairs, while older children play on the swings or slides, and all will no doubt spend considerable time in later years with a mobile phone pressed as close as possible to their brains."
