Council rules no environmental assessment needed for Ross-on-Wye retail plan

Herefordshire Council has confirmed that a proposed Lidl food store near the A40 Over Ross Roundabout in Ross-on-Wye will not require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The decision, issued on October 23, follows an EIA screening request submitted on September 25 by the applicant.

Planning officers assessed the scheme against the EIA Regulations 2017, which set thresholds for developments likely to have significant environmental effects. The site, measuring approximately 0.85 hectares, falls below the 1-hectare threshold for urban development projects and is not located within a designated “sensitive area.” Although the plot lies around 35 metres south of the Wye Valley National Landscape (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), the council concluded that the impact would not trigger EIA requirements.

The decision means the applicant can proceed with the planning process without preparing a full Environmental Statement. Full details of the screening opinion are available on the council’s planning register under reference 252779.
