Following on from Goodrich Primary School’s decision not to buy plastic wristbands for Sports Relief, the School Council are now supporting the Marine Conservation Society’s campaign for the ban on plastic straws.
When the supplier of the school milk was asked to replace the plastic straws with paper straws, the request was refused. The reason given was that no other schools had made this request.
As a result, the School Council has written to all of the primary schools in Herefordshire asking them to contact their milk supplier to ask them to stop using plastic straws. Although it is very near the end of the school year, they have already received some support from other schools.
In addition, pupils, staff, friends and governors were asked to make a pledge to reduce the amount of single use plastic that they used. Each pledge was displayed in school. Year 6 pupil, Barney, brought the message home with his model turtle for everyone to fill with single use plastic.
Having recently visited the Envirosort Recycling Centre in Worcester, the pupils are keen to continue their fight against single use plastic and take action to protect marine life.
