Local MP Jesse Norman has not declared which way he will be voting in the EU referendum, despite his close friend Boris Johnson pledging his support to the ’out’ campaign.

Conservative MEP Anthea McIntyre, who lives in Ross-on-Wye, told the Ross Gazette she will be backing the Prime Minister after his successful renegotiation of Britain’s relationship with the EU.

As details of David Cameron’s deal for the UK emerged from the Brussels Summit, Miss McIntyre told the Ross Gazette: "He has achieved what we hoped for and a lot more than many predicted.”

However when the Ross Gazette asked local MP Jesse Norman if he was going to to support the PM or share the stance taken by several leading Tories, including his friend, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, he did not give a definite answer.

The MP told the Ross Gazette that he has concerns with both sides of the argument.

He said that he has been very concerned over the years about the lack of legitimacy of many EU decisions; about the often disastrous effects of the Common Agricultural Policy, both here and in its effects on developing countries; and, more recently, at the failure of the Schengen countries to control their borders.

However he also has concerns the other way: in particular, that we would lose a great deal of influence, within Europe and globally; that “Brexit” might be economically highly disruptive; and that the migrant situation might get worse, not better, if we left.

With the forthcoming EU referendum to be held on June 23rd, and many prominent politicians making their position clear, MP Jesse Norman said:?“I think the best thing I can do, as a Member of Parliament, is to hold the ring for you, my constituents, and try to pose questions and provide facts which help you to make the decision for yourselves and on your own terms, when the moment comes to decide."
