Ross-on-Wye Town Councillors decided unanimously against the purchase of medals to be presented to former Mayors which would have cost £310.06 plus VAT and a bar at a further cost of £92.42.
The Councillors were considering the purchase which would mark a Mayor’s term of office at the meeting on Monday, April 11th.
Councillor Cutter said that he had served as a town Mayor three times and he had purchased his own medal after being Mayor the first time and then paid for the bars when he served further terms of office. He said “I am sorry if an individual cannot afford it but this expenditure should be carried by the person, it is not the council’s responsibility.”
The Clerk told the meeting that Past Mayor’s badges had been paid for previously and there is a precedent for both. She said it has not been included in the budget and would have to come from general reserves.
There was no vote as all the Councillors decided not to support the proposal.
