Students at John Kyrle High School, in Ross-on-Wye, have staged their own EU referendum ballot, and voted overwhelmingly in favour of Remain.

The whole school was able to take part in the referendum, which was held on Wednesday, June 22nd. Members of the sixth form had been allocated sides to campaign for. They explained that students in the lower years tended to sway from side to side as the campaign progressed but many of the older students stuck to their original decision.

The pupils also watched televised debates to help them make up their minds. Teacher Mark Croad said that those students who were in school, some years have been involved in exams, had really engaged with the arguments. He said the process was developing their sense of values and citizenship.

At one stage it was thought that the vote would be quite an even split but when the votes were counted, there were 365 for Leave and 586 for remain, with three spoilt papers.

The Gazette will be eager to see if this reflects the final outcome of the referendum nationally.
