There was a large turnout of supporters from the Leave campaign to welcome the UKIP EU Project Fact Battle Bus to the Market Place in Ross-on-Wye today (Thursday, June 16th).
MEP Jim Carver told the Ross Gazette that he was delighted with the support and he believes turnout for the Referendum will be very high. As a member of the Vote Leave campaign, he is working towards getting rid of his own position, as leaving the EU would end the need for MEPs, but said that he feels strongly that leaving the EU would be better for Britain.
He added that the Referendum had re-energised the country, and he could see that people had more pride and belief and that whatever the result, there would be a huge re-alignment in British politics.
Clare Muir, Chair of the Ross and District Labour Party, was present with a small group of supporters of the Remain campaign. She told the Ross Gazette that she wanted to attend to voice her opinion, she is proud to live in a democracy and feels everyone is entitled to their views. She added she was not there to have a slanging match.
One local resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Ross Gazette they thought it was unfair that the UKIP Battle Bus was not given a parking fine, despite having been parked in a loading bay, for approximately 45 minutes. They added that they witnessed a young man park his car in a loading bay, and he averted a parking ticket when he told the Civil Enforcement Officer that he was with the UKIP bus.
David HowleBranch Chairman, UKIP Hereford & S Herefordshire told the Ross Gazette: "We liaised with the police in Ross when the event was at the planning stage and it was the police themselves who allowed us to park in the loading bay which was cordoned off in anticipation of the arrival of the bus."The Ross Gazette understands, the ITV programme, Parking Wars, was being filmed in Ross-on-Wye that morning. The news of the attack on Labour MP Jo Cox came through after the UKIP bus had left Ross and following the tragic death of Jo Cox, Britain Stronger in Europe suspended all campaigning until after Friday, June 17th.
