Madam, Living adjacent to one of the electricity sub-stations affected by the recent faults I can only praise the activities of Western Power Distribution. Shortly after the failure on Monday, their engineers were on site to locate the fault, which turned out to be two concurrent faults in the underground high voltage supply. The complexity, both of the faults and the system, meant that they could not reconnect to the grid until at least one of these underground faults had been repaired. By mid-morning the problems were fully understood and the decision taken to use a large mobile generator, which arrived early afternoon and was operational by around 3pm, restoring supply. Work then started to locate the faults and to dig at the bottom of Trenchard Street to uncover the underground fault, not an easy task, and then repair it. This work was carried out late into the evening and the following day and reconnection to the main grid supply made on Tuesday evening. Only then could the work start to repair the fault at the top of the Edde Cross Street, which was a major undertaking. We should all be very grateful to all the people involved for their hard work and the co-ordination of all those involved, electrical engineers, excavation contractors, road repairers etc. We often underestimate the complex systems which exist to provide electricity to us all.
Peter Morgan, Edde Cross Street.
