Experts at South Hereford Volkswagen are urging motorists across Herefordshire to get their cars ready for freezing conditions – with forecasters predicting sub-zero temperatures.
Weathermen say the entire country could fall into the grip of a three month freeze, which will bring brutal winds, snow storms and heavy rain with temperatures as low as -10C.
Now Volkswagen technicians at South Hereford Garages are urging motorists to get their cars in top condition to help them stay in the driving seat through the predicted snow, freezing temperatures and torrential rain.
Colin Barker, Brand Manager at South Hereford Volkswagen in Hereford said it was essential for motorists to give their cars a thorough health check before the big freeze sets in.
“It’s a well-known fact that you are more likely to break down in bad weather – particularly when it is freezing cold – but by following Volkswagen’s winter health checklist you can help yourself avoid problems when the snow falls.”
Colin said things for motorists to check and keep an eye on included:
• Tyres. In temperatures of 7°C and below tyres under-perform. Ensure that you have at least 3mm of tread on all tyres and it makes sense to check pressures every week. If you need new tyres, make sure you fit a reputable make from a good source, and consider winter tyres for improved safety.
• Antifreeze. Keep it topped up and, if you are concerned, get your garage to check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.
• Battery. Older batteries often fail when the weather turns nasty. If your battery is more than five years old it might be time to consider a replacement to avoid a nasty surprise when the mercury dips.
• Screen wash. Don’t be tempted to settle for washing up liquid, which can smear the windscreen and reduce visibility. Use a 50 per cent mix of a good quality brand to reduce the risk of its freezing in the cold.
• Windscreen. Clean the inside with glass cleaner to avoid dazzling rays from the low sun. And check your wipers are in good condition before they are put to too much work in the rain, sleet and snow.
• Service. Get your car serviced in time for the bad weather if you want to put your mind at rest. That way any nasty surprises should be spotted in time to be put right before they can do too much harm.
Colin also urged motorists not to be lulled into a false sense of security by any mild weather and to make sure they had a winter emergency kit in the boot of their car. He said: “Nobody thinks they are going to be caught out, but every year we get at least one fall of heavy snow which leaves some drivers trapped in their car overnight.
“By making sure you have an emergency kit in the vehicle you improve your chances of both getting through the night unscathed and doing so with at least a degree of comfort. A typical kit should include a blanket, rug or sleeping bag, shovel, bits of carpet or thick cardboard to place under driven wheels to help regain traction on ice or snow and some salt or sand.
“Drivers should also carry sufficient reflective jackets, an ice scraper and de-icer, torch and batteries, tow rope, snow chains, jump leads, bottled water, snacks such as chocolate and cereal bars, and extra screen wash.
“It is also a good idea to have a spare charged battery for your mobile phone in case you find yourself stuck for some time.
“The team at South Hereford Garages in Hereford is always more than happy to offer advice and help to any motorist who is unsure about what they might need, and we would urge them to drop in for a chat to see how we can help put their minds at ease.”
