AS the spring approaches, the almost hidden view across the Wye from the Prospect has been revealed.
For hundreds of years local people and visitors have enjoyed the view from the viewing platform of the River Wye, Wilton Castle, the historic oak tree and the Black Mountains beyond.
But comments on social media last year claimed that a part of the town’s heritage was about to be lost from view due to Herefordshire Council’s lack of care and compassion for the town.
Cllr Louis Stark said at a Ross Town Council meeting in early 2025 that the county council’s contractor would not prioritise the cutting down of the trees because of the instability of the rock face from which they are growing.
But last week contractors from Chapel Tree Services stepped up to the challenge and spent a day chopping down the unwanted growth, some of which required the use of large crane, forcing the closure of Wilton Road.
A spokesperson at Ross Town Council explained that although the trees are the responsibility of Herefordshire Council, the town council agreed to fund the necessary work to restore this iconic view.
Cllr Stark said: “I was delighted to stand at the Prospect and admire the view after the clearing of the overgrown vegetation at the top of the Rock face.
“This has been a long time coming as it required specialists to do this tricky piece of work. Getting the funding was part of the challenge too and I am grateful for the generosity of Ross Town Council in stepping in and arranging the work to restore the Prospect to its former glory.
“A wonderful view is inspiring and I certainly felt uplifted seeing the Black Mountains against the afternoon sun. It is also nice to know where Wales was again.”
