THE racing ducks of Ross-on-Wye braved the shallow waters of the river to complete this year’s race.

All the ducks went into the river together with the organisers letting the 2,000 plastic ducks out of the two large bags.

They swam in formation but then three ducks forged ahead of the main pack, in what was a relatively slow race thrilling the crowd of spectators.

Because of the low water levels, children acted as 'unofficial' collectors helped the organisers make sure no duck was left behind at the end of the race.

Each duck was sponsored in the race by a £1 raffle ticket. These donations will go to the Ross Lions Charity, that helps worthy causes within the local community.

Colin Parry, President of Ross Lions said that the race had seen tremendous turnout of spectators standing on the banks of the river and that there had just been enough water in the Wye for the race to be held.

Mr Parry said: “The winner was 1291, second 1808 and third was 0153 and the ticket holders will receive £150, £100 and £50 respectively. The winners are currently being contacted, and arrangements are being made for them to receive their prizes.

“Ross Lions would like to thank the Ross Rowing Club and the Ross Sea Cadets for their support and help enabling this successful charitable event to take place; the funds raised will assist good causes in the Ross-on-Wye area.

A £10 voucher for Toy Box, for the toy shop in Ross, has been sent to the child who successfully guessed the correct number of ducks in the sweet jar.
