Jeremy Whitehouse is very well-known in Ross as a former teacher and as an artist. He was born in Ross and taught at several schools before returning to the town to join John Kyrle High School.

Although he has held several exhibitions of his work, featuring subjects as diverse as wildlife and aircraft, he often returns to the theme of the railways, especially around Ross. He has a new exhibition, ‘Lines around Ross’ at Made in Ross at the Market House next month.

As a child Jeremy frequently used the local railways and his love of the local area, and the beautiful lines around Ross, are evident in his latest work.

He told the Ross Gazette that the line from Ross to Symonds Yat was one of the most beautiful as it crossed the river several times. Ross was a magnificent example of a station building but the town only has a few remnants of the railway now.

In 2000 Jeremy held an exhibition in the Market House. This led to the production of a video about the local lines, focusing on the fabulous scenery, as well as many anecdotes about travelling on the steam trains of the past.

The paintings in his new exhibition at Made in Ross revisit that subject and will hopefully appeal to people with an interest in steam and all its historic nostalgia. In addition to the original paintings, the exhibition will showcase the video explaining the history of the lines.

The new exhibition includes four paintings of Ross, one by the signal box looking east to Gloucester, one of the platform facing west, one of a goods train coming out of the goods shed and one of the engine shed.

Lines around Ross – an exhibition of paintings along the local railway lines runs from October 8th – 31st.
