After a fantastic response from Ross Gazette readers, we are able to identify many of the people in the picture which was published in the Gazette last week. The man getting married in this photo is thought to be Charlie Parsons, a local builder who lived in Wye Street, overlooking the river. Charlie and his wife used to run the church at Overross, and were avid participants in Ross Rowing Club.
Charlie was part of a large family, and one of his sons, George, won awards in the Regatta in 1954, and then became a vicar. Another of his sons, Jimmy, worked in the building trade, but fell while working by Merton House, and sadly died.
Another son, Chris, is thought to have emigrated to Canada, and the whereabouts of the oldest son, Peter, is unknown, but is thought to be local. Charlie’s daughter was a Nurse in London.
The picture is thought to have been taken in the mid 1920s, but we are still unaware of the name of the bride. If you know this information please contact: [email protected]
• The man on the far left of the photo, standing up straight, is thought to be Jack Farmer, who was part of a firm in Henry Street that did upholstering. His brother, Jim Farmer, used to run a shop on New Street.
• The man pictured on the far right, facing the camera, is said to be Albert Dean, whose daughter Connie Dean, used to run a toy shop on Broad Street in Ross, which is now The Electric Shop.
Albert Dean’s son, Dougie, was a pilot in the war, and was said to have been killed in action, after being shot down over the Channel in 1941.
• The man on the right, wearing a hat and looking towards the couple, is said to be Ray Drew, who started a marquee company in the town. He started the static caravan park on Ledbury Road, and provided marquees for the Rowing Club.
