MP JESSE Norman found himself at the centre of a political storm last week, with recriminations and accusations flying across Westminster. Jesse helped organise 91 Tory MPs to vote against the second reading of the controversial House of Lords reform bill, creating a bit of a stir for the MP, who's trajectory towards politic's dizzying heights was was seen by many to be guaranteed. Jesse had been seen as an obvious candidate for promotion in the imminent ministerial reshuffle. "But the qualities that marked him out for preferment - brains and cunning - were deployed against the government," said the Guardian, just one of the broadsheets that devoted many inches to him.

So what are the prospects now for the former blue eyed boy of Cameron's inner circle? Readers on the Gazette Facebook page were supportive. 'Well done for speaking out what he believes. Refreshing to see such honesty,' said Patrick Darling, and Rosemary Bundy congratulated him: 'Well done Jesse.'

Contacted by the Gazette, Bishop Anthony Priddis, a member of the House of Lords, said: "I applaud Jesse Norman for his principled and typically sensible comments and views about the proposed House of Lords reform.

"The House of Lords does a vital and excellent job scrutinizing bills, and this role would be impaired, in my view, if most of the House was elected. The nation as a whole would suffer.

"Also, the proposals would bring about a constitutional clash, I think, between the House of Lords and the House of Commons, which would serve no one, as well as causing real harm. The phrase, "if it isn't broke, don't try and fix it", comes to mind!"

Local betting shop William Hill have quoted 20 -1 that Norman will be the next Tory leader. Pretty good odds? You decide.
