AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report a very short entry for the Bank Holiday market at Ross-on-Wye, but the livestock that went under the hammer represented great quality throughout.
The finished cattle entry topped at 401ppkg - £2,674 for a cracking blonde heifer from DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm.
Strong Continental Cross cattle sold well throughout, trading between 360p and 401ppkg. Although the dead price has dropped. there is still a demand for finished cattle from the buying contingent.
It was also a short entry in the cull cows section, but nonetheless a strong trade came forward with the entry topping at £2,095 or 266ppkg. Well-meated Continental Cross cows were the key, however native bred Herefords sold to 263ppkg or £1,946.
Overall average price of cull cows - £1,881/head or 275ppkg
The top vendor was the MR Williams Partnership, Trewaugh Farm with a price/head of £2,095.60.
Auctioneer Richard Williams reports there was a good entry for lambs which met another strong trade.
Again, the best lambs sold very well peaking at £180 per head (493ppkg) from B Blandford & Sons of Mayfields Farm.
Heavier lambs also met a better trade demand. Overall average price of lambs £143/head 44kg.
A seasonally reduced entry in the hoggs section topped at £147.50. All hoggs sold to a firm trade with almost all of the entry sold being heavy or overweight.
Overall average price of hoggs £130/head – 49kg The top vendor was D & ME Whitcombe of Stert Farm.
A good entry of cull ewes sold to a strong trade throughout.
However, the best ewes topped at £200 with best Grade One type ewes selling between £180 and £200. Medium grade ewes sold between £150 and £180 and the leaner sorts sold between £110 and £140.
The top vendor was HH Williams and Son at Red Barn Farm.
