A GOOD entry of commercial finished cattle continued to meet strong demand throughout the livestock auction on Monday, March 23.
Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that steers topped at £2,849 per head for an entry from Messrs EJ & JM Westoby of Brooklands.
Cattle remained keenly sought after by retail buyers, with prices ranging from 360p – 420p per kilogramme.
A smart run of Lim cromss heifers from Messrs DE & SJ Cheaker of Ostbridge Manor Farm sold to 410p & 420ppkg.
There were few traditional butcher-type native heifers and steers forward sold well at between 340p – 360p per kilogramme.
Quality Continentals consistently sold between 380p and 420p per kilogramme. With a quality Blonde cross heifer selling to 320p per kilogramme.
More cattle could have been easily sold to this electric trade.
The overall average price of finished cattle was £2,378 representing 374p per kilogramme the top vendor was EJ & JM Westoby & Sons of Brooklands.
A shorter entry of cull cows met fierce competition with the trade peaking at 305p per kilogramme (£2,238 per head), with well-fleshed Continental cows generally selling between 280p – 305p per kilogramme.
Overall average price of cows - £1,783 representing 278p per kilogramme.
The top vendors were GD & MJ Samuel of Bargains Farm and MR Williams Partnership of Trewaugh Farm.
A nice entry of finished hoggs met a blistering trade, peaking at 460p per kilogramme. A strong contingent of quality export hoggs sold very freely between 440p and 460p per kilogramme.
Quality exports weighing between 38kg and 43kg realised between £175 and £200 per head.
Demand for heavyweight hoggs remained consistent with hogg weighing in excess of 48kg sold between £200 abd £221 per head.
The overall average price of hoggs was £192/head with the top vendors being P & S Miles of Celyn Cottage and EC Williams & Son of Tump Farm.
