AUCTIONEERS RG & RB Williams report a fantastic show of cattle on offer at the livestock auction in Ross-on-Wye on September 29 with the entry topping at £3,080 for a Limousin cross steer.

Other cattle from GH & GG Savidge of Dean Common Farm reached £3,010 and £3,001. Auctioneer William Probert pointed out that the quality of meat is the key to securing these top prices with majority of the entry securing premium prices.

Multiples of cattle sold over £4 per kilogramme showed that the trade is here to stay. More cattle are required week on week to meet demand from our buyers.

A nice entry of cull cows with a mixed bred consignment peaked at £2,039 for a South Devon at 60 months old.

The overall average was recorded at £1,292 a head.

The top vendors were H Chapman & Sons, of Pound Farm ad WG & SJ Clements, of Elm Farm.

A smaller entry of lambs met with a much faster trade than expected topping at £189. Quality well-fleshed export lambs peaked at 334p per kilogramme with many well-meated lambs selling between 320p and 334p per kilogramme.

Heavy weights met strong attention from buyers peaking at £189. In general, the heavy weighted lambs sold between £155 and £189.

Meat is key to securing premium prices. More lambs could have been sold to this flying trade.

The top vendors were VE & BM Samuel & Son of Upper Monkton Farm and VM & DJ Gunter, of Cowmeadow Farm.

A good entry of cull ewes and rams peaked at £200 for a run of Texel cross along with all stronger sorts selling between £170 and £200. North country mule ewes topped out at £158. Leaner ewes sold between £100 and £130. The complete entry averaged £118 per head.
