Passionate campaigners, Pam and Keith Meakin, who are members of Wye UP, the Ross-on-Wye group working to encourage people to ditch single use plastic and to try and recycle more, have been very disappointed that Ross Town Council is unable to install recycling bins for litter in the town.

Pam Meakin, member of the Wye UP group and Refill local co-ordinator contacted Ross Town Council regarding the installation of Bottle/Can/Litter bins around the Market House area on June 21st.

They said: “There is an urgent need to separate this litter or at least attempt to, especially now we are in the visitor season. On Sunday I was alarmed to see our bins overflowing with plastic bottles cans and papers, the bins stuffed full to capacity. This overflow relies on our volunteer litter pickers to try to keep our town looking nice. Monmouth have a few of these bins around their riverside picnic area, surely we can aspire to the same.”

However on July 4th they received the following reply from Balfour Beatty: “We are unable to make this adjustment as all the municipal waste is sent to the incinerator at Hartlebury to make energy. Provision for recycling is not a possibility due to contractual obligations.”See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
