MADAM, Neil Pascoe's letter published in the Gazette two weeks ago, criticizing our MP Jesse Norman's stand on reform of the Lords, seems to me to present a misunderstanding of the MP's view. There is a crucial relationship between the Commons and the Lords.
It may be necessary to alter this relationship, but the matter needs deep and lengthy discussion. Surely it would be unwise to rush into law such a vital constitutional change without thorough debate disrupting the present parliamentary programme.
There are those favouring an elected Lords, and those who argue that the existing appointment set-up, though not perfect, operates well in the interests of this country. In between are some who want a bit of both elements.
From newspaper comments that I've read, it would seem that Mr Jesse Norman took his stand in order to ensure that there would be a proper and right time for this matter to be debated; as a result receiving a black mark from his leader, Mr Cameron, and a few kicks up the backside from Conservative whips.
At least he didn't keep quiet in order to further his parliamentary career. Also, we all need to understand some of the political 'shenanigans' behind the cries for change.
Mr C S Mantle,
Ross
