The Ross Gazette, the leading weekly newspaper in south Herefordshire, has produced an historic 16 page supplement to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War I. 'Remembering World War I in Ross-on-Wye', a free pull-out to be published inside the Wednesday July 30th edition of the Ross Gazette, provides an emotive perspective on how the war changed life forever in the market town of Ross-on-Wye. Included are a look at Ross at the start of the war, stories from many families on the fate of local servicemen, and the effect of the war on the role of women in the area. The supplement will also re-print the solders' poignant letters from the front, which were originally published in the Ross Gazette between 1914 and 1918. The contrast between the humdrum and the horror, in the content of these letters, prove a stark reminder of the sacrifices made The Gazette's editorial team, who have been researching and writing the stories since late 2013, have compiled a definitive roll of honour to acknowledge all the names which appear on local war memorials. Editor Jo Scrivin said: "Over the past year the Ross Gazette has been busily researching and preparing a special commemorative supplement to mark this anniversary. Many young men from Ross and the surrounding villages were killed or injured at battles which changed the world. "On August 4th, the whole nation will be commemorating the beginning of World War I. We feel it is right and proper to pay tribute to their sacrifice and we hope that readers will also be moved by the stories that are included." Readers of the Ross Gazette have shown great enthusiasm for the 'Remembering World War I in Ross-on-Wye' project and have contacted the newspaper in numbers to share their stories. General Manager Charlotte Reynolds said: "We have trailed the supplement in the Ross Gazette for many months and the response from readers has been phenomenal. We are very proud of the supplement and we look forward to hearing readers' feedback when it is published on July 30th." The Ross Gazette is a weekly newspaper covering Ross-on-Wye, south Herefordshire and parts of western Gloucestershire. First published in 1867, the Ross Gazette was acquired by the Tindle Newspaper group in 1998.
