The delightful Autumn weather and ideal playing conditions meant that it was a privilege for members to take part in Ross Golf Club's first Winter stableford event of the season and 130 members took full advantage. None more so than 24 handicapper Richard Mackley, whose game was a model of consistency and good judgement and although he missed out on scoring on the 15th hole, he quickly got back on track with an outrageous long putt on the 17th hole to secure a par. His ultimate 43 stableford points score was always likely to be a winning total and so it proved which earned him a two shot handicap reduction and Richard's name will top the current list of 12 qualifiers who will compete for the Club's Annual Barnfield Trophy in March 2012.
In handicap Division 1 Tom Shotton headed the final results table with 41 points just getting the better on count-back from Danny Gear and the other qualifiers were Simon Buck, 40 points and Mike Credland, James Ford and the irrepressible Charlie Walker with 39 points each. Mike Harris and Joe Lyons, with 38 points each, just missed out this time but there will be four more Stableford Events over the next few months to enable them and others to rectify matters. In Handicap Division 2, the qualifiers to join Richard Mackley, were John Allen and Chris Tweedale, who both scored 41 points, Chris Soane and Charles Taylor who each carded 40 points and Malcolm Thornton's 39 points.
Another Club event to receive the full support of members was the October Medal when 116 members took part. In a very close tussle it was the net 68 score by 14 handicapper Gary Moyle which won the day, just edging out Brian Clouder on count-back who also carded a net 68. In handicap Division 1 James Hay's name topped the list with a net 69 followed by Matthew Blythe with the same score and John Hebdon's net 70 just in front of Brian Prosser, Tim Rigden, Bill Day and Tom Shotton who all got net 71's. In handicap Division 2 there were some good performances by Robert Brain and James Ford, both with net 69's and net 70's by Paul Reynaert, Simon George, Chris Good, Mike Cooper and Richard Kimp.
