A HIGH-profile campaigner who called for the clean up the River Wye has died while swimming in the river he cherished.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it received a report concerning the safety of a man who was last seen swimming in the River Wye in Glasbury, Powys, on Monday June 30.

After a multi-agency search the following day, officers confirmed the body of Lord David Lipsey, 77, had been recovered.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer led tributes saying the peer "worked tirelessly for what he believed in" and will be "sorely missed" by all who knew him.

In the House of Lords, Lord Lipsey explained the worsening condition of the River Wye, saying it had been done “untold harm” by pollution allegedly caused by manure from largescale poultry farms.
