Madam, I am amazed and appalled when driving in and around Ross-on-Wye to see various road signs directing traffic on diversionary routes due to the closure of Cross Copse Street, as a result of the renewal of gas pipes.

One sign at the roundabout on the A40 approach to Ross from Gloucester advises the way to Tudorville is via the link road to the Overross/Labels roundabout and on to Goodrich then back towards Ross via Walford. Several extra miles are travelled.

My main concern is access to my place of work, namely Archenfield Veterinary Surgery and more important for the people bringing their animals for treatment some of which will undoubtedly be very ill and/or in much distress due to unforeseen injuries. The owners are often in distress themselves, worried about their pets. It can be disorientating to be: confronted by a diversion sign saying road closed, with an arrow directing them to the left or right, which they correctly follow only to find themselves initially going in the wrong direction travelling along the A40 via Goodrich, eventually arriving at the junction of Walford Road and Archenfield Road at the Prince of Wales pub – then they see another diversion sign. Drivers are not sure where they are.

Thus situation actually happened twice this weekend whilst I was on duty, one occasion in daylight and the other in the dark.

It is nigh on impossible for me to direct people to the surgery, my only option is to meet them at a prearranged venue in Ross then ask them to follow me on a non-diversionary route to the surgery.

These road works are likely to continue for at least another 5 weeks, with the last week or so actually in Archenfield Road. I can only assume that the present diversionary mayhem will continue to create serious problems for ourselves and anyone else who has a business on this side of Ross.
