Various Ross community champions are coming together to help the town stave off the worst of the cost-of-living crisis this winter.
Plans are in place to have a mixture of venues offering hot drinks and soup each week.
The Larruperz, St Mary’s Church Hall, Tudorville, and The Venue are the main locations which have stepped up to help people; this is backed up with the use of the library as a warm space, with hot drinks and soup being offered at Ross Community Garden.
The Library is unable to serve hot drinks but organisers are hoping people will be able to walk round to the community garden where they will hopefully be able to be offering hot drinks—and possibly soup—up to three times a week.
The library has opened itself up as sanctuary during its normal opening hours while the other venues will each be laying on special “warm space” sessions once a week—to begin with.
Organisers are continuing to finalise arrangements this week.
What’s on offer will likely change from weekly-to-week or from month-to-month. Leaflets giving specific details of the warm spaces will be delivered by the Community Development Trust (CDT) volunteers.
The Gazette will be printing up-to-date information on what’s exactly on offer. Details will also be available through the Ross Town Council website.
It is expected that take-up will be slow to start as people tend to refrain from accepting “charity” but organisers are hoping that the warm spaces will become really great places to meet people and share some company over the difficult winter period.
If people wish to donate money for their drinks or soup that’s fine but it’s also completely fine for them not to. These sessions are designed to really help “all of us” get through another tough winter.
It is expected that by the third week in November the weather is likely to be significantly colder and organisers will have mobilised all the volunteers by then.
The Gazette reported last week that Talk Community at Herefordshire Council has launched an online directory of warm spaces. The spaces listed in the directory are open to anyone who may be struggling with the increase in the cost-of-living and will be completely free of charge to residents.
Information about warm spaces in including opening times, information is available on the Talk Community website.
