Ross First XI entertained Stourbridge at The Park on Saturday August 13th. Stourbridge won the toss and elected to field. The Ross opening pair of James Tiffen and Jack Evans went about punishing the bowling in the early overs of the game, before Tiffen was caught behind for a well made 20. Gabriel Warwick then joined Evans at the crease and moved the score onto 67 before Evans was clean bowled by A. Jevans for 24. Skipper Bruno Warwick came and went without troubling the scorers. G. Warwick and Hiram then set about rebuilding the innings and progressed the score to 104 before Warwick was castled neck and crop by a well disguised yorker. Hiram was then joined by Harry King, both played with fluency and style and advanced the score to 245 for 5 with a stand of 140, before King was well caught off the bowling of A Mohammad for 79. Hiram soon ran out of partners with Dan Risk being the only other batsmen to progress into double figures in the lower order. However Hiram had other ideas. Aided by some poor fielding and a few lusty blows he found himself on 95 in the last over, and after the first ball was elegantly placed over the bowler's head for four a maiden First XI century was surely on the cards... However he holed out to gully off the third ball of the 50th over on 99 off the bowling of A. Jevans who returned to the pavilion with figures of (16.3-0-73-8), leaving Ross with a mammoth total of 322 all out.
After a delicious tea break, Ross immediately got stuck into the opening batsmen from Stourbridge. Daniel Risk claimed the first scalp of the innings removing W. Jennings LBW for 2. Bruno Warwick, the other opening bowler claimed 2 wickets for 30 runs off 7 overs. The bowling attack chopped and changed throughout the innings to not allow the batsmen to become settled to one type of bowling.
Wickets continued to fall at a regular rate and Stourbridge never looked in with a hope of chasing down the colossal total set by Ross. Captain D. De Saulles was the only resistance in the Stourbridge team, chancing his arm to 53 before falling to pick of the Ross bowlers G. Warwick who returned with figures of (6.3-1-3-13). Harry King also returned with figures of (5-2-3-17).
Ross truly dominated all facets of the game and this is highlighted by the winning margin of 172 runs.
