Ross CC's eagerly anticipated encounter against Old Hill 3rd XI took place at The Park on Saturday 6th August; a top of the table clash in Division 5 of the Worcester League. The visitors claimed the toss and opted to field, on a wicket that was difficult to judge.

The Ross innings couldn't have got off to a better start with openers Jack Evans and James Tiffen knocking the shine off the new ball, pinching singles to the ring and putting wayward deliveries to the boundary. However, Evans abruptly fell for 30 runs and Gabriel Warwick soon followed for LBW.

Nevertheless, that axiom of cricket that is the phrase: "Don't lose wickets in batches" appeared to have been forgotten, as Tiffen, who had played gracefully for his 70 runs, was run out by Oliver Moseley. Bruno Warwick also got out cheaply to a poor delivery and Charles Hiram (17) offered some resistance against the visitors before Jack Casstles, on his debut for the First XI, provided a much-needed 45 runs to the scoreboard.

The remaining Ross batsmen fell for scores of under 10, until Ross were all out for 202 in 46 overs. After a mouth-watering selection of sandwiches and cakes at tea, the Ross bowlers had to try to put up some sort of a challenge.

Contrary to this positive outlook, some erratic deliveries in the opening overs and poor fielding throughout the innings, left Ross with few runs to play with and in desperate need of wickets to accumulate bonus points.

G. Warwick and Tiffen began to make inroads into the Old Hill middle order, but the run-rate continued to fall. Hiram and Dan Risk also picked up a wicket apiece in their spells.

Unfortunately though this was to be in vain, as a shortage of runs allowed Old Hill to reach the required score in 43.3 overs, with Oliver Moseley (59*) making a fine half-century.

Ross picked up 6 points to remain in third position and still in contention in Division 5 of the Worcester League.
