Are you thinking of going to the beach this summer? Then two Ross-based organisations, The Marine Conservation Society and Wyenet Internet Services, are all set to guide you to the safest beaches.
Although Ross is a long way from the sea it is the perfect base for the UK charity dedicated to protecting seas, shores and wildlife as it is so easy to get to other places from Ross.
The Marine Conservation Society launched their Good Beach Guide 2010 at the end of May. As the only independent guide to water quality at UK beaches, it made headline news across the nation's TV screens, newsprint and radio. As a result, well over 24,000 people visited the Good Beach Guide website on its first day.
"When achieving this degree of media coverage and public interest in our cause, it is essential to know that our web site can cope with the volume of people visiting it," said MCS Communications Manager, Richard Harrington.
"Local web hosting company Wyenet has been enormously helpful in ensuring that our site is able to cope with huge peak demands in user traffic," he added.
Website Officer Ryan Townley said: "Wyenet analysed the performance implications for the website pre-launch, checked for errors on the site and consulted with our web developers to minimise glitches on the day. They also optimised the web server for performance during the launch period, and provided sufficient bandwidth to ensure adequate speed for visitors."
Wyenet is a leading independent UK based web hosting and internet service provider, providing economically priced connections to the Internet.
Val Coker from Wyenet told the Ross Gazette that they had installed a new server because they knew from previous experience that there would be a surge of new people visiting the website when it was launched. There are usually about 4,000 unique visitors to the Good Beach Guide on an average day but on launch day this went up to 24,205 and there were 16 million hits.
