In the evening of November 11th a concert took place at St Mary’s Church, Ross-on-Wye, before the audience followed the piper to the Prospect for the lighting of the Beacon by Reverend Preb Kay Garlick DL, as part of the Nation’s tribute for ‘Battle’s Over’.
The ladies of Allegra Choir sang in church, then the Mayor of Ross, Councillor Harry Bramer cut the first slice of the cake which had been made for the occasion by local resident Sue Kirby. The choir sang again after the Beacon was lit and then led the crowds in some wartime songs, while slices of the celebration cake was handed round to the gathered audience.
The event signified the light of hope after the darkness of the war years.
