Staff from Saymor Furnishers, which has a branch in Ross-on-Wye, along with Ross-based designer Bekki Stovell, joined the DIY SOS team in Avening, Gloucestershire, recently.

Nick Knowles, and his team, were transforming the home of Ben Wernham, who was left paralysed following a swimming pool accident whilst on holiday with his family. His house needed adapting so that he can move home from hospital and live with his partner Ella, daughter, Iris, and stepdaughter, Olivia.

Bekki said: “I have been involved with DIY SOS projects in the past and I was keen to help out with this one when I heard it was coming to Avening.”

Bekki and her team arrived on site early on Wednesday morning, and didn’t finish in the house until the early hours of Thursday morning.

Bekki told the Ross Gazette: “It’s lovely to see the community coming together for such a good cause and I was excited to have the opportunity to work with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen who was the on-screen designer for this build.”

Saymor Furnishers, donated several beds for the home. David Say, Managing Director at Saymor said: “Our business is made up of men with families of a similar age to Ben, so it was something the whole company was passionate about getting involved with."

Thanks to the generosity of the local community, Ben’s home is now safe and accessible, ready for his return home from hospital. There were emotional moments on Thursday for the big reveal when Ben and his family came to thank the helpers.

The show will air on BBC One later this year.
