Last week, Marion Ryder brought an old postcard into the Gazette office. The postcard was given to her brother many years ago, and it was a painting of a view of Ross-on-Wye.

The postcard, ‘Ross-on-Wye - From the Meadows’ brought back many fond memories of Marion’s childhood, she would often roam the fields pictured in the postcard, but she was unsure where the scene was painted from.

Luckily, Michael Jones, who lives in Highnam, but originally came from Ross-on-Wye, recognised the scene when he saw the postcard in last week’s paper. He told the Ross Gazette that the view is from Benhall Farm, in Bridstow. The white building, shown in the postcard, would have been the farmhouse.

Mr Jones owns a plate with an illustration, depicting the same view. The plate, was printed for Williams Central Cafe, which is now Costa Coffee.

Paul Scudamore also contacted the Ross Gazette, about the postcard. He said:?“The postcard painting is probably from Benhall Farm - obviously before the by-pass was built.”

On Social Media, more local residents identified the location as what was once Benhall Farm. Peter Brewer got in touch with the Ross Gazette via Twitter. He wrote:?“That’s from behind Benhall farm, this is the view from last summer, house is now obscured by a barn.” He also tweeted us a photograph (pictured top tight) of what the scene looks like today.
