Ophelia Morgan-Dew, who is three years old and from Ross-on-Wye, has recently been given the IQ of 171, (Einstein was 160).
Ophelia’s family first noticed her higher learning potential when she was eight months old and said her first word, “hiya”. From there she progressed quickly and could speak very early. She also knew her numbers, colours and the alphabet from very early on.
Ophelia’s Mum, Natalie Morgan-Dew, told the Ross Gazette: “She has an amazing memory and remembers events that happened before she was 12 months old!”
Ophelia, who attends Abacus 2000 Nursery School in Ross-on-Wye three days a week, was excelling at all of her early learning goals, beyond her years, so her family decided to take her to see a child psychologist, Joan Freeman, in London.
Ophelia’s Mum, Natalie, said: “Joan specialises in gifted children. Ophelia was assessed and we found that at three years old, she has the intellect of a 6.5 year old.
“She has an IQ of 171 (Einstein was 160), and is in the top 0.03 percent for her age.
“Now we have this information we can help her with her higher learning potential, so we are now working with her playschool and future school to get her the help she needs.”
Ophelia is now a member of Mensa which is a massive achievement. To be part of Mensa you have to be in the top two percent of the public.
As Ophelia is in the top 0.03 percent, she was accepted readily, and they will provide her with resource packs to help with her future learning.
Natalie said: “She loves reading books with me or her Dad, and she loves number work and letters and the computer. She is quite an active child, always likes to be doing something and is very spirited. She loves playing with her cousins and going to the park.
She added: “Ophelia is such a beautiful girl and I would be proud of her no matter what she achieved, as long as she was healthy and happy!
“A lot of people, including myself, almost shy away from celebrating their children’s intellectual achievement - there seems to be a stigma around it. But then I thought it is no different to parents celebrating a medal in a sports event, so she deserves praise for being so clever.”
