AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report that a smaller entry of finished cattle met a flying trade topping at a fantastic 450p per kilogramme at the livestock auction held in Ross-on-Wye on July 7.

The auction saw numerous heavy heifers peaking at £2,776 while stronger heifers sold between £2,310 and £2,776 while quality butchers’ heifers consistently sold between 390p and 450p per kilogramme. Steers, dominated by dairy cross sorts, peaked at £2,543.

The top vendor was DE & SJ Cheacker of Ostbridge Manor Farm.

At the auction cull cows peaked at £2,050 or 290p per kilogrammes. Beef cross cows consistently sold between 250p - 290p per kilogramme. Dairy cross cows sold from 200p to 220p per kilogramme.

The overall average price of cull cows - £1,561 per head. The top vendors were J J Taylor & Son, of Home Farm and FO and EC Turner of Poolfield Farm.

The auctioneer, William Probert, requested that more cows are wanted week on week to meet buyers demands.

Fat lambs met a faster trade peaking at £172 representing 363p per kilogramme. Heavy weights, over 46 kilogrammes, met with a flying trade and sold between £160 and £172 per head.

Medium weight lambs that were well meated sold up to 363p per kilogramme.

The auctioneer observed that more lambs could have easily been sold to today’s trade.

The top vendors were WD & EJ Kerr, of Matthews Farm and JR & RH Williams, of Green Ditch Farm.

A good entry of cull ewes and rams met a blistering trade peaking at £205 for Suffolk Cross ewes while Continental Cross mile ewes sold between £170 and £205.

Leaner sorts consistently sold between £115 and £150. The overall consignment of eves averaged a fantastic £135.

The top vendors were AJ Gilder of Plaistow Farm and GG Chandler & Son of Cefn Clytha.
