A fun, family-friendly afternoon, to celebrate Ross-on-Wye’s local history, and the life and times of a much revered philanthropist, took place in St Mary’s Churchyard on Sunday, May 21st.
The Ross-on-Wye Tourism Association organised the event, which celebrated the 380th anniversary of John Kyrle’s birth, in collaboration with St Mary’s Church, The Ross Civic Society, Ross in Bloom and Made in Ross.
During the afternoon, visitors could enjoy playing 17th century games - such as Shove Ha’penny and a potato shy. There were also various activities tailored to suit younger children, such as a dressing up box, a treasure hunt trail and a hedgehog trail.
Teas, coffees, and cakes were served in the church hall, and a 17th century scene was set, as live period music was played, and the event organisers dressed in traditional Stuart costumes. Local actor, Brian Jackson, played the role of John Kyrle, the Man of Ross.
Local history lovers had the opportunity to learn about John Kyrle’s life from a talk, delivered by historian, Jon Hurley, and a guided walk, led by Jon and Heather Hurley.
The church tower was also open, and the Made in Ross artists led craft demonstrations at the historic Market House.
John Kyrle’s garden, known as the Knot Garden, was open to the public during the day, and the afternoon ended with a 17th century Evensong, as John Kyrle would have experienced it, at St Mary’s Church.
