Local postcards are among the entries flooding in to Smiths Auction Rooms in Newent for the April Sale
The sale has a special section for stamps and postcards and as usual the poor stamp valuer has been almost buried alive in boxes of stamps which he has valiantly catalogued and valued and they are now just waiting to be laid out, lotted and photographed.
Postcard entries have also been flooding in and there is an amazing range of entries including a local Edwardian card of Newent High Street showing Smiths Estate Agents current premises. Other local scenes include a scene of the Ross-on-Wye Station Yard with a group of carts and carters, and a number of views from Gloucester and the surrounding areas. There is also a large album of beautiful glamour postcards including a very striking Art Deco set depicting women accompanied in a range of activities by a strange cupid figure. They are designed by Lucien Achille Mauzan who is said to have created over 1000 postcard illustrations, mainly during the war years, and his work is very collectable today.
Smiths sale has filled up so quickly this month that the April sale is now closed for entries. Entries for the May sale (which includes a special section for jewellery and silver) are invited on April 9th, 11th, 16th and 18th, 10am-3pm or on other days by appointment.
