A Ross-on-Wye resident has raised concerns that not enough is being done to provide grit to people living in the area.

Charlie Fayce has told the Gazette that a number of Vectis Close residents have struggled through the recent snap of cold weather, unable to properly grit their streets.

Charlie said that whilst the gritters do a good job on adjacent streets such as Roman Way, it would be necessary to make sure that people on Vectis Close have the option to grit their own pavements.

He added that it’s mostly pensioners who live in the immediate area and are at substantial risk of injury if there’s no provision for making the pavements safer through the frost.

He’s been in touch with Balfour Beatty, the company who provide gritting services to Herefordshire Council. They said that they’ll be looking into the issue and will be sending someone down within the next 10 days to see if the street is eligible for a gritting bin.

Herefordshire Council aim to fill all grit bins before winter and maintain the stocks throughout the winter season. If salt supplies and resources allow, they re-stock bins on request. The county council provide the salt or grit in these bins for spreading on public highways only. Anyone can request a refill of a council owned grit bin using the form on the council’s website, or by calling 01432 261800 if it’s urgent.
