Friends of Rotherwas Chapel gathered at the little chapel to remember those from the local community who lost their lives in WW1. These included soldiers in France and women who died from working at the Rotherwas munitions factories - the ‘Canary Girls’.
Three letters from the Front were read, one from a soldier to his mother in Weston under Penyard and another from a Scottish soldier to Ada, who had included her name and address in a box of shells she made at Rotherwas.
After singing some of the old songs that had cheered people 100 years ago – ‘Keep the home fires burning,’ ‘If you were the only girl in the world’, ‘Pack up your troubles’ and ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’, a silk poppy was laid on the altar. There was a red poppy for the soldiers, and yellow ones for the Canary Girls in grateful memory of each one of those lost from the Rotherwas community.
