THE ARREST of a local man in a Ross pub late on Saturday night escalated into a serious public order incident that brought dozens of police officers to the town.

Two police officers were assaulted, and a total of seven people were arrested on a variety of offences. Three were handed fixed penalty tickets of £80 on the spot, and the other four were taken into custody.

Of these, one was cautioned, and three – including the original offender – were interviewed and bailed pending further enquiries.

The incident began at around 11pm, when local police received a report of an assault taking place in the car park behind Boots.

The suspect entered the Crown & Sceptre pub, on Broad Street, and tried to hide in the women's toilets.

A single police officer soon found and arrested the man, at which point pandemonium broke out.
