Madam, I notice new road signs have been erected on Wilton Roundabout ('no stopping', since you ask) and, no, I can't see why they are necessary so I thought I'd air my irritation with your readers. It's about wasting public money and cluttering up our towns and countryside.
This country has a signage disease and the symptoms are ugly, distracting and must be expensive. The Authorities are obsessed, it seems to me, with informing motorists in writing about every little regulation, direction and advice they can think of.
For instance, in Ross, if you progress along Gloucester Road from Cantilupe Road toward the Marketplace you will see the following signs, all within the 175 yards before the cross roads:
8 x '30 minutes only' parking signs
4 x lights on the pedestrian crossing (4!)
3 x 'loading only' signs
2 x 'restricted zone'
1 x 'disabled parking' sign
1 x taxi stand
At the Marketplace, I've noticed, there is a sign for
Worcester. Why, in the centre of Ross, do we suddenly need a sign for Worcester? If you are in the centre of Ross, heading for Worcester then – chances are - you are going the wrong way!
In Cantilupe Road, we now have a recently installed 'narrowing' with a pelican crossing. Is this really necessary? I'll bet the buses don't like it.
Surely we don't need all this clutter. Is there any way to stop this proliferation and money wasting?
Andrew Pearson, Ross
