The sun shone and young people turned out in force to take part in a Skatepark Competition organised by The Basement Youth Trust. This was the culmination of weeks of training and practice that were held at the park throughout the summer. Funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports, a programme of Saturday outdoor activities was enjoyed by over 100 young skateboarders, scooterers, and bmx bikers. But it wasn't just about the fun – young people were involved in the planning, organising and financial decisions that started back in the early Spring.Youth Council member, Xav Gunn, was also involved in the steering of the plan and is a keen supporter of the BYT. Other prominent supporters include the Mayor of Ross, Chris Bartrum, who has made the BYT his charity for his year of office.

Down at the Skatepark, Youth Workers from the BYT were always on hand, with 'Midge' on the decs teaching some young people about DJ techniques. 'Team Rubicon' took charge on the mic, and organised the competition, with prizes in all three-wheeled sports.

Keith Wilding, Chair of Trustees of the BYT, said "It was great to hear parents and observers comment on the way the youngsters showed respect for each other, helping those who needed advice and sharing the space responsibly. We hope to be able to find funding to run similar training days and events next summer."

The BYT run open-door sessions for young people aged 11-19, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. They are based in the YZone Youth Centre, Hill Street where they offer activities and a safe place to be from 6 – 8pm.
