One hundred years to the day that the Hereford Regiment left Suvla beach in Gallipoli in Turkey, snowdrops were planted at Suvla Barracks in Hereford.
Major Robert Barnes, together with Major Peter Friend, both former Company Commanders from Herefordshire recently visited Gallipoli, in Turkey.
They undertook an eight day pilgrimage to the battlefields where 100 years ago thousands of men, including members of the Hereford Regiment, were injured, taken ill or died in an ill-fated attempt to defeat the Turks.
After six months the Herefords and other units withdrew, the Herefords, who had landed 18 weeks before with 750 men, left from the same beach with just 100 men.
As well as photographs and lots of memories the Majors also brought back a large piece of soil from the ground between Hetman Chair and Kaslar Chair.
On December 12th, Major Barnes planted the soil with snowdrops at Suvla Barracks in Hereford, it is hoped they will bloom each year to remember the sacrifices made by the soldiers in this conflict.
