Four years ago when Sophie Simpkins, a pupil at Lea Primary School, attended a birthday party, little did her parents think it would change her life. But the party was held at Five Acres Gym in the Forest of Dean and Sophie's potential was spotted by a coach. Sophie, who is now ten years old, started training regularly and progressed quickly. She is now a member of the Somerset squad and attends training sessions at the Academy of Gymnastics in Portishead five times a week.

Her training regime involves a lot of travelling and is a big commitment for all the family. Her dad, Stuart has even started helping out at the gym and is training to be a coach rather than just waiting for her.

Although her schedule is, at times, very tiring, mum, Kerry Hogben, told the Gazette that Sophie enjoys all aspects of gymnastics but a particular favourite is the vault.

Sophie has the opportunity to travel to Florida in February next year to take part in the Magical Classic, a competition which attracts gymnasts from all over the world. The only downside is that it will cost around £1,200 to enter. Sophie's parents hope that local businesses may like to sponsor her and be able to support a young gymnast who could be a star of the future.
