SEVENTY years ago in October 1947, the WI Market opened its doors in Ross-on-Wye in a small shop on High Street, and paid a rent of 7/6d a week.

Today the Country Market, as it is now called, still opens every Saturday selling a variety of produce, local and seasonal that can be produced in a domestic kitchen or garden. There are currently 14 regular producers and items for sale including homemade baked goods, preserves, eggs, fruit and vegetables, plants and handmade crafts. Ccured meats, cheeses and pâtés have recently been added as well as a variety of honey from two local producers.

There will be a special market taking place on Saturday, October 7th to mark the 70th anniversary at the Venue, between 9.00am and 1.30pm. The organisers are hoping that their eldest customer (approaching his centenary) will cut a special cake at 12 noon. Everyone is welcome to come along and join the celebration and to find out more about the market and peruse old photographs.
