The Tearfund Café Church event at Weston Under Penyard Village Hall, near Ross-on-Wye attracted a lively audience of more than 50 folk of all ages.

After a delicious bread, cheese and home made soup lunch Tearfund representative, May Bull, explained that families are literally drowning under our plastic waste, which is shipped overseas to places like Pakistan by the container load.

Villagers suffer from toxic piles of filthy waste on their doorstep, which emits poisonous fumes when it is burnt. It is collected for recycling but those who collect it are paid a pittance. A kilo of the right waste takes hours to collect and would not even raise enough money for a loaf of bread.

The Tearfund Café Church service held in Weston Village Hall raised a final total of £271 for Tearfund’s work. The Food for All Christian Bookshop sold £140 worth of sustainable items and all the brochures for similar products were taken. See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
