AN issue over speeding motorists thundering through a local village prompted Peterstow Parish Council to flag the situation with the police.

Last week the police’s Ross-on-Wye Safer Neighbourhood Team were out in Peterstow, as part of Operation Jetwing, to gather valuable information and to conduct some speed enforcement.

PC Simon Harradine said he had the pleasure of meeting with and chatting to local residents about the issue and conducting surveys in relation to their concerns and thoughts on speeding in the village.

The three police officers based in Ross have conducted speed enforcement in the village along the A49 in both directions at different spots throughout the village and various times of day.

Multiple drivers were caught travelling in excess of the 40mph limit, but those exceeding the limit by a lesser margin were given words of advice, and those speeding way outside the possibility of speedo error, were issued a ticket.

Despite the multiple signs, and two police cars being clearly visible; one driver passed the speed check at 47mph.

The police said that it was positive to learn the average speed was in fact 36mph considering the extensive number of vehicles surveyed.

PC Harradine said: “It is our hope that operations such as this will assist moving forwards, with overall reduction of vehicles speeding through the village. We will continue our efforts, and to take action in relation to speeding in this area and we have been asking for views of residents on the best times to carry this out.”

Meanwhile PC Harradine told Ross Town Council at its recent meeting that he was hoping that the West Mercia Police roads policing team would be focussing some of its efforts in the greater Ross area in the near future and added that the team often use unmarked vehicles to catch out drivers not obeying the speed limits.
