MADAM, Last week's Gazette reported a talk by Mr Nigel Griffiths, head of JKHS, to the Vaga Probus Club. Mr Griffith and his staff are rightly proud of the school's academic achievements and the most recent OFSTED comment on the very positive attitude and responsible behaviour of the students.

This was not my recent experience. Last Thursday I caught the No 34 bus, which leaves the school at 15.35. I boarded it in Cantilupe Road. It was full with students of varying ages. I am 90 years old. I carried an umbrella and a bag. Not one of these so-called responsbily behaved young people got their back-sides off their comfortable seats for me. I stood all the way home, exposed to a possible fall at every swerve of the bus. Holding on to some support from somewhere, I could not even push the button to get off the bus. Fortunately, a young lady standing beside me did it for me. Is not courtesy to the elderly a necessary part of our teaching? Are parents failing to raise their children with a correct attitude to others? I have had to write to Mr Griffiths in the hope that a more responsible attitutde may be instilled into the students.

Mr C S Mantle, Ross.
