AN ANIMAL sanctuary just outside Ross-on-Wye has launched a fundraising appeal after recent winter storms caused serious damage to its animal enclosures.
Pen Y Bryn Animal Sanctuary, based in the Herefordshire countryside near Ross, is hoping to raise £2,595 to replace a pony shelter that was badly affected by high winds, heavy rain and ice.
The damage has been described as irreparable, prompting an urgent need for a new structure to protect the animals from the elements.
The appeal has been organised by Peter Gill, who said the harsh weather had taken its toll across the sanctuary, with the shelter used by ponies Bibs and Bobs suffering the worst damage.
Bibs and Bobs arrived at Pen Y Bryn in December 2023 from Woodfield Animal Sanctuary on the Gower Peninsula.
The pair have spent most of their lives together and are rarely seen apart, apart from the occasional friendly bicker over food. Their close bond has made them firm favourites with volunteers and visitors at the sanctuary.
The planned replacement is a mobile field shelter that can be moved around the paddocks as needed. Built to provide long-lasting protection, it will offer insulation, a solid floor and a weather-resistant roof designed to cope with Britain’s changeable climate.
The shelter will also include a fold-away bed to allow for easier cleaning and maintenance.
Pen Y Bryn Animal Sanctuary offers a safe haven to animals that come into its care and relies heavily on donations and community support to continue its work.
All money raised through the appeal will go directly to the sanctuary to ensure Bibs and Bobs have a warm, dry and secure place to shelter during the winter months and beyond.
Those wishing to support the appeal or learn more about the sanctuary’s work can find further information on the Pen Y Bryn Animal Sanctuary website.
