AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report a smaller entry than normal of finished cattle met a flying trade peaking at £2,724 at its livestock auction in Ross-on-Wye on July 28.

Any number of well fleshed Continentals sold between 360p and 388p per kilogramme. The entry was dominated by native bred Aberdeen Angus cross cattle which met strong demand.

The top vendors were D Staight, of Hill Farm and DM & CS Andrews, of Glen Court Farm

A nice entry of cull cows peaked at £2,205 – 280p per kilogramme while well meated cows sold between 240p – 280p per kilogramme. Leaner sorts sold from 180p to 220p per kilogramme. The top vendors were P H Beavan of Church House Farm and C Simcock & Sons of The Green Farm.

A large entry of lambs met a flying trade which saw lambs peak at £200 twice. Heavy weight lambs commanded the strongest demand from start to finish with those heavier than 48kg selling between £170 and £200 per head.

Quality Continentals topped at 380p per kilogramme with any number of quality sorts selling between 360p and 380p per kilogramme.

Auctioneer William Probert observed that there was a big difference between lean and fat lambs.

The top vendors were N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm and O Howell of Yew Tree Farm.

A larger entry of cull ewes met strong demand, peaking at £205. Other stronger/heavier ewes constantly sold between £180 and £205. Smaller ewes sold from £130 to £160 and North Country Mule sold at £160. Leaner ewes attracted fierce bidding selling between £100 and £130 per head. The overall average price of ewes was £125.
