A GOOD entry of finished cattle continued to meet strong demand throughout the livestock sale in Ross-on-Wye on Easter Monday.
Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that steers topped at £2,761 per head for an entry from EJ & JM Westoby & Son of Brooklands.
Cattle remained keenly sought after by retail buyers, with prices ranging from 360p – 399p per kilogramme.
A smart run of Limousin cross heifers from GH & GG Savidge of Dean Common Farm sold between 378p and 399p per kilogramme.
There were few traditional butcher-type native heifers and steers forward sold well at 360p – 380p per kilogramme.
Quality Continentals consistently sold between 380p and 399p per kilogramme.
The overall average price of finished Cattle was £2,573.
A short entry of finished hoggs, due to the Easter Bank holiday, met another scorching trade peaking at 439p per kilogramme representing £215 per head.
Export lambs sold very freely between 410p – 430p per kilogramme. meeting keen competition from buyers.
Demand for heavyweight hoggs remained consistent with those weighing in excess of 48kg sold between £200 and £215 per head.
The top vendors were D Clothier & Sons Ltd of Shooters Bottom Farm and EC Williams & Son of Tump Farm.
A good entry of cull ewes and rams met strong demand throughout. With the complete consignment averaging £185 per head. Stronger sorts of well-fleshed ewes consistently sold between £200 and £236 per head.
Leaner and smaller-framed ewes were equally well bid for selling between £170 and £190.
Overall the ewe trade averaged £185 per head while a short entry of rams topped at £260 with the complete consignment averaging £180.
The top vendors were SJ & EL Stables of Kings Pitt Farm and EH Radcliffe & Son Ltd of Penmark Place.
